Yaqub Talib, the brother of former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib, has been indicted for murder in Texas.
Citing court records, WFAA reports that Yaqub Talib has been indicted by a Grand Jury in Dallas County on felony murder charges. The charges stem from the death of Michael Hickmon, the opposing coach in a youth football game whom Talib allegedly shot and killed amid an altercation in August in the Dallas suburb of Lancaster.
Aqib Talib, 36, and Yaqub Talib, 39, were the coaches of the North Dallas United Bobcats youth football team.
Eyewitnesses told media outlets that Aqib Talib started the brawl that ultimately led to Hickmon’s death, out of apparent frustration with the officiating in the game and question over the correct score.
Aqib Talib “ran across the field and ran over on our sideline and got in the ref’s face,” Heath Mays, a coach alongside Hickmon, told WFAA.
“He threw the first punch,” Mays continued. “and you see Mike [Hickmon] trying to defend himself.”
The Lancaster Police Department said in a statement that Yaqub Talib shot Hickmon multiple times before fleeing the scene; the suspect turned himself in on a warrant for murder last month.
Aqib Talib’s attorney said in a statement last month that his client “was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”
Aqib Talib had been slated to be a studio analyst for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football coverage this season, but Ian Rapoport reported that, in light of the tragedy, the former cornerback was stepping away from the role to spend time with his family.
